Univ Minnesota: Piyyut Conference

The piyyut (poem) has long been a means for rendering the Jewish experience through language and song. For Jews in the Islamic World, piyyutim (pl.) have served as an important vehicle for expressing the here and there, as well as the now, then, and will be. Dr. Samuel Torjman Thomas will present a paper-performance entitled “Performing Ibn Gabirol: Reverberations and Resonances.” This talk will focus on the work of Sephardi Golden Age paytan Shlomo Ibn Gabirol, the place of his texts in modern and contemporary performance, and the enduring reflections in Jewish thought ensconced in his corpus of work.

Featuring Dr. Samuel Torjman Thomas (oud/vocals/ney)
