From Oud to Guitar: Vibrating the Strings

The oud is a historical string instrument with biblical roots. Its place in several different musical traditions from the Middle East, North Africa, and Europe is well known and central. Dr. Samuel Torjman Thomas, ethnomusicologist and multiinstrumentalist, explores the organology of the oud and its relationship to the guitar, as well as presents a performance demonstration of several different oud styles and modal traditions. *masterclass possibility: combining oud and guitars in learning a few pieces from different parts of the Mediterranean World.

Followed by a masterclass with Dr. Torjman Thomas, combining oud and guitars for guitar society members (you are invited to bring your instrument with RSVP).
